Fragrance Oil Load Chart: Room Spray, Diffuser, Perfume, Soap, and Cleaner Bases

Fragrance oil load is the share of the finished product that is fragrance oil. Room spray is 4%, reed diffuser oil 15–20%, perfume 15–25%, laundry detergent up to 2%, mop soap and all-purpose cleaner up to 3% of the concentrate, and hand soap or body wash up to 0.5%.

Each line below is the load used in that product's recipe and the range published with it. Oil amount = batch size × load. A 16 oz batch at 4% is 0.64 oz of oil; a gallon (128 oz) at 4% is 5.12 oz. Always stay inside the IFRA limit for the specific fragrance oil. For any other batch size, use the fragrance load calculator.

why the loads are so different

  • Products that touch skin stay low. Foaming hand soap and body wash are built so 0.5% still reads clearly; laundry detergent is capped at 2% for performance and skin safety.
  • Passive diffusion needs more. A reed diffuser has no heat and no spray to carry the scent, so it runs 15–20%. Perfume is sprayed on skin and judged up close, so eau de parfum runs 15–25%.
  • Concentrates are scented before dilution. Mop soap is mixed at 4 oz per gallon of water and all-purpose cleaner at 1:16, so a 3% concentrate is faint once diluted. Judge the scent after dilution, not before.
  • Alcohol room spray sits in the middle at 4–9%. Start at 4% and move up in 0.5% steps; the same base runs 2–6% as a body mist.

how to scale any recipe

  1. Step 1. Pick the finished batch size in ounces: a 4 oz bottle, 16 oz, a gallon (128 oz), or 5 gallons (640 oz).
  2. Step 2. Multiply by the load. 128 oz × 4% = 5.12 oz of fragrance oil.
  3. Step 3. Subtract the oil from the batch to get the base. 128 − 5.12 = 122.88 oz of base.
  4. Step 4. Buy the smallest fragrance oil that covers the batch. Oils come in 1 oz, 4 oz, and 16 oz; a 16 oz bottle covers three gallons of room spray at 4%.
  5. Step 5. Mix, rest 24–48 hours where the recipe calls for it, and check clarity before bottling.

one line per product

  • Room spray: Room spray is 4% fragrance oil. One gallon is 122.88 oz Room Spray/Body Spray Base and 5.12 oz fragrance oil.
  • Non-alcoholic room spray / diffuser oil: Non-alcoholic room spray and diffuser oil run 10–15% fragrance oil. The recipe here is 12.5%: 14 oz base and 2 oz fragrance oil makes 16 oz.
  • Reed diffuser: Reed diffuser oil is 15–20% fragrance oil. At 20%, a 16 oz batch is 12.8 oz Reed/Electric Diffuser Base and 3.2 oz fragrance oil.
  • Perfume: Eau de parfum is 15–25% fragrance oil in Perfume Base. At 25%, one gallon is 96 oz base and 32 oz fragrance oil.
  • Mop soap: Mop soap takes up to 3% detergent-compatible fragrance oil. The recipe here is 1.875%: 125.6 oz Concentrated Mop Soap Base and 2.4 oz fragrance oil per gallon.
  • Laundry detergent: Scented laundry detergent is up to 2% fragrance oil. One gallon is 125.44 oz Unscented Laundry Detergent Base and 2.56 oz fragrance oil.
  • All-purpose cleaner: All-purpose cleaner is scented as concentrate at up to 3% fragrance oil, then diluted 1:16 with water. 8 oz of scented concentrate makes one gallon of ready-to-use cleaner.
  • Foaming hand soap: Foaming hand soap is up to 0.5% fragrance oil. A 16 oz bottle is 15.92 oz Foaming Hand Soap Base and 0.08 oz fragrance oil.
  • Body wash and hand soap: Body wash and hand soap is up to 0.5% fragrance oil. A 16 oz bottle is 15.92 oz Body Wash & Hand Soap Base and 0.08 oz fragrance oil.

common questions

Is the load a share of the base or of the finished product?

Of the finished product. A 4% room spray gallon is 122.88 oz base plus 5.12 oz oil, which totals 128 oz. The one exception in the recipes is the non-alcoholic base, where 16 oz base plus 2 oz oil is written as 18 oz finished at 12.5%, which is the same share.

What if the fragrance oil's IFRA limit is lower than the recipe load?

The IFRA limit wins. Check the certificate for the oil and the product category before setting the load, and test the blend for clarity and separation before a full run.

Why does my room spray look cloudy?

Some fragrance oils carry heavier notes that haze in alcohol. Rest the blend 48 hours; if it stays cloudy, reduce the load slightly. Stir instead of shaking so you do not add bubbles.

Can I use the same oil in every product?

Soap, detergent, and cleaner recipes call for detergent-compatible fragrance oils. Spray, diffuser, and perfume bases take standard fragrance oils within their IFRA limits.

Every base above ships in 16 oz, 1 gallon, and 5 gallons.
